GEOFOAM - Lightweight Structural Void Fill

In-Fill Voids with Predictable Physical Properties
Geofoam is quickly becoming the "go to" lightweight fill material due to the protective nature of its compressive strength and other physical properties. Unlike other fills like soil, sand, gravel or other lightweight aggregates, Geofoam's strength is consistent at installation and does not depend upon compacting or other re-enforcement measures.
Swimming Pools
Filling in a unused or unwanted pool with Geofoam has many advantages.
  • Avoids costly pool removal
  • Reduces lateral pressure
  • No need for Re-enforcement
  • Future Renovation or inverse removal of foam
Stairwells and Ramps
Using Geofoam to form and fill-in for stairs and ramps provides advantages
  • Quicker time lines
  • Faster builds
  • Less concrete used
  • More stable substrate
Stadium Seating
Using Geofoam to form and fill-in for stairs and ramps provides advantages
  • Cost saving over framing
  • Less weight
  • Accurate dimensioning
  • Remodeling capable

Geofoam Advantage

Lighten the Load
Geofoam can be up to 100 times lighter than soil and 50 times lighter than traditional fills with similar compressive strength. Geofoam has the ability to reduce mass and connected gravitation physical forces. This super lightweight fill material can help reduce soft soil loads. Its weight-to-strength load bearing characteristics are uniquely effective in reducing the weight burden on underlying soil without sacrificing compressive strength. Plymouth Foam DuraFill EPS Geofoam weight is between .75 lbs/cubic foot - 3.o bs/cubic foot.

See how weight was reduced using Durafill Geofoam on a resort project on a Lake Michigan peninsula.

Reduce Construction Timeline and Labor
Site conditions such as weather, poor access, and/or harsh terrain can add cost to a project by creating longer build timelines as well as job delays. Geofoam may not be as materially as cheap as dirt or some other fills, but it is most often quicker to install and easier to move. This speed and ease of Geofoam can reduce labor cost and reduce equipment moving cost which makes a project less expensive overall.

There are numerous ways that Geofoam can reduce cost:
  • Geofoam does not have to be compacted
  • Compared to other fills Geofoam can be placed quickly without the use of large equipment
  • Delivery costs are reduced as 1 truck of Geofoam equates to 12 truck of other fills
  • Not expensive or time consuming form needed as Geofoam can have materials used direct on or next to it
  • Many case less material to be removed in using Geofoam
  • Possibly reduce the amount or thickness of concrete used
  • Less expensive structural utility products could be used with less loading
  • Less settlement can decrease call backs or maintenance costs

Enviromentally Friendly
EPS is environmentally friendly in so many ways. EPS consist of 98% air and the 2% that remains is derived from a by-product of oil refining. By-products that could become waste, but have found there way into a productive product that saves energy. In fact, EPS insulation can return up to 200 times the amount of energy required to produce it, and reduce emissions by up to 100 times the volume produced during the manufacturing process. EPS is one of those product that can be used and recycled over and over again. Learn More

Additional Geofoam Advantages
  • Predictable Uniform Material BehaviorGeofoam can be designed and manufactured to attain and maintain a more specific design criteria which is quite different from alternative fill products that can fluctuate and become unreliable.
  • Lateral Pressure ReductionGeofoam is light weight and can reduce the lateral force on a retaining wall or abutment.
  • Thermal Insulation PropertiesGeofoam l is 98-99% air by volume, making it a highly efficient thermal insulator. It can be used to thermally protect utilities or other frost prevention application.
  • Non-BiodegradableOur Geofoam will not lose it physical properties or degrade while covered, thus assuring a long life and long-term performance.
  • Inert - no leachingOur Geofoam has no leaches and will not contaminate the surrounding environment.
  • Low interface friction
In direct shear tests the interface friction between sand and our Geofoam is comparable to the internal friction of sand alone.

Geofoam Application and Uses
Plymouth Foam manufactures Geofoam insulation for the United Sates including the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio. Plymouth Foam provides Geofoam insulation using Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) in the form of flat insulation, tapered insulation and block insulation. Durafill EPS Geofoam is a lightweight closed cell rigid foam insulation used in a wide variety of geotechnical applications. Geofoam can be used for road embankments, retaining walls, abutment backfill, slope stabilization, pavement insulation, roadway sound barriers, foundation fill plaza decks, levees, dikes, landscaping berms, utility protection, frost protection, stadium seating, foundations, green roofs, cold storage, construction fills, tunnels, pool infils and decks, garden decks, and even recreation forms such as mini-golf, obstacle courses, racing and ice rinks. Geofoam is an engineered light weight fill designed to reduce loading. Plymouth Foam’s EPS, the safe insulation, is manufactured in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ohio.
